Portfolio presentation @ Arci Gallery

Nino Sekhniashvili, born in 1979 in Tbilisi, Georgia, lives and works in Tbilisi. She studied at Department of Graphic Art at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, and at the Dusseldorf Art Academy, under Rosemarie Trockel. Sekhniashvili is an unconventional conceptual artist, who utilizes various media. She is primarily concerned with the questions of identity, helplessness, fear and humanity as compared with the questions of power and sexuality. The major theme of her works is interest in irrational depths. Banal and trivial situations are always in line with the irrational and ritual. Images are full of anonymous characters in trance, floating in abstract spaces. She is aware that people do not live in a vacuum, but are rather part of a specific social system, in which ideas can be realized only within the agreed framework. Sekhniashvili’s works reflect a desire to find a way to break through this system. Some of her works reveal a dialogue with the self.
